Sovinec Museum & Kosárna
Illustrated Educational Books
for the Museum
Context
The Kosárna Museum commissioned a set of educational illustrations for children. The book was to be guided by two main characters — a scythe and a sickle — and the color palette had to reflect the museum’s visual identity. The overall illustration style and artistic approach were left open.
Solution
The illustrations for the Scythe and the Sickle were designed as mystical entities — spirits or guardians inhabiting the museum.
The visual style features sharp edges and textured surfaces, giving the pages a more grounded and tactile feel.
Each spread combines a dialogue between the two characters on one side and an interactive task for children on the other.
Context
The illustrations for the Sovinec branch came with a slightly different brief.
The main character — a friendly ghost named Žďuch — was originally created by a child who won the museum’s design contest.
My task was to create supporting illustrations and, when necessary, adapt or refine the existing drawings of the main character.
The entire book was designed in black and white, allowing it to also serve as a coloring book for children.
Solution
The character of Žďuch was only slightly adjusted — mostly on the left pages with the activity tasks, where he might wear glasses or point towards the assignment.
For the environments on the right pages, I drew inspiration from the museum’s surroundings to create a sense of place and authenticity.
